Anne Midgette: Ranking Great Orchestras

WHAT’S IN THIS VIDEO: Ranking orchestras is difficult because of geographic distance. There has been homogeneity with mixing of players internationally over the past several decades. But it is amazing how orchestras maintain their traditional quality of personality over decades even long after the original players who established those qualities are gone.

  1. Rebecca says:

I wonder if the reason that certain orchestras maintain their personality is because of the people hiring. If the people that are in a position to hire keep hiring the same types of people, then wouldn’t it stand to reason that the same type of personality would continue to permeate the orchestra? However, after listening the listen and do #1 I can definitely see how orchestras could change dramatically. Listening to the Boston Orchestra certainly demonstrates how an orchestra could change its sound over time.
